The richest 6 furlong race in the world!
The Breeders' Cup Sprint is an Weight for Age Grade I Thoroughbred horse race for three year olds & up. Run on dirt over a distance of 6 Furlongs (3/4 mile), the race has been held annually since 1984 at a different racetrack in the United States or Canada as part of the Breeders' Cup. As of 2008, no horse has won this race more than once, but Midnight Lute is reportedly going to attempt this year. Here's his effort in the slop last year:
Several trainers have won this race twice, including Hall-of-Famers Bob Baffert and D. Wayne Lukas, but jockey Corey Nakatani has had the most success in the Breeders' Cup Sprint, winning the race four times, including a remarkable run of three consecutive times from 1996-98!
Things are a bit of a mystery this year as the Breeders' Cup will be ridden on a synthetic surface for the first time in it's 25 year history. We don't know what kind of an effect the change will have; we'll just have to wait and see!
