O.K. this is simple. This is your all-time favorite horse. Not necessarily the Best Horse of all-time, but the one that you consider to be your favorite one to watch, root for, etc... Oh, and say why, it don't have to be long, but at least add some meat to the note!!
Also, if you own a horse, you can put it down here too, but also add in your favorite horse of all time.
As for myself. My Favorite Horse of All-Time is Smarty Jones. I was a senior in High School and for whatever reason I was watching the Kentucky Derby, and of course back in 2004, Smarty won. I think after he won the Preakness he was on the cover of Sports Illustrated and the article about him really began to catch my attention. I was almost certain that my first year of watching horse racing that I would see a Triple Crown Winner. Ha, actually, I didn't exactly understand the significance, but only knew that it hadn't been done in forever, so I was hoping to see history, but we all know the tragic truth. I don't necessarily think Smarty was the best race horse ever, and in retrospect I would believe that Ghostzapper would have beat Smarty in one of those two races, but Smarty introduced me to this awesome sport that I now thoroughly enjoy, which is why he is my Favorite Horse of All Time.

I think that Ruffian was the greatest horse ever, and she put on a real show too, but Curlin and Zenyatta are my favorites that are still alive. Late closers are lots of fun to watch!

Cigar or John Henry........John Henry or Cigar........Both had heart and wanted to win. Alot of fun and excitement watching them run.

Tough call-just ONE horse? How about top three, as it's a tie: Secretariat, because he was dominanant, a physical specimen, and a true super-horse; Ruffian, because she was the best filly ever, arguably. Her record speaks for itself, as she led every race she finished. The "match race" she was in was a real seventies thing, and should not have happened! (death match is more like it) Ghostzapper was lightning in a bottle, and could have been a contender! (his foal should be racing sometime soon, right-anyone?) Right now, Zenyatta is phenomenal. One of the top picks for the Kentucky Derby, I Want Revenge, Pioneer, Friesan Fire, and Dunkirk, could also end up being very good. Seattle Slew and his "war dance", Spectacular Bid, who was indeed, spectacular; Barbaro, Man O' War, Cigar.... Sorry, i'm too much of a blabbermouth to keep it short and down to one horse!

This is a hard one to talk about. I guess my favorite all-time horse would have to be Funny Cide. Being a New York bred and winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness is something special. Not too many New York breds have won a triple crown race. Also getting to see him run at Finger Lakes in 2007 in the Wadsworth Handicap and actually betting money on him was very special in my heart. I have never seen a Kentucky Derby winner but to see him up close was an experience I will never forget. I am also going to have to add Zenyatta in there. I love her running style. She is true champion.

Seabiscuit got me into racing. Smarty Jones got me initiated, Afleet Alex got me hooked.
Love love love Curlin and Zenyatta. Ginger Punch was also special to me
Demido is my favorite horse I hotwalked.
Bank Candy and Hello and Goodbye are favorite to cheer for as they belong to my friend.
As a kid my favorite was Silver Charm.
And I have to say my own exracehorse, Town Ghost :) (plus my non-tb's)
Let us run with perseverance the race that is marked out for us.

I think that my favorite race horse of all time has got to be Seattle Slew, he had heart and was the first and as it is, the only, undefeated Triple Crown Winner, and it wasnt like he only had like 8 starts, he had a lot. And he was gorgeous! That obviously counts for a lot.

I'll have to add the class of 2007 to the list too. Basically, the three horses, Street Sense, Curlin, and Hardspun, all had amazing and memorable races during the 2007 Triple Crown run, with all of them being highly competitive. Hardspun may have never won during the stretch, but he was always close. Street Sense's Kentucky Derby was remarkable, especially considering that he was basically last midway through the race. Although Curlin was a bit of a letdown to me during the Kentucky Derby, that Preakness Stakes run was quite stellar. It was the perfect lead into Belmont where the he barely lost the Battle of the Sexes to Rags to Riches, which was equally as amazing. I think if the race were like 10 yards longer Curlin would have won it because it seemed like every 10 yards they were trading the lead. Even though the Breeder's Cup wasn't nearly as exciting to me, I still thought Street Sense, Hardspun, and Curlin (who eventually won) put on another amazing race too. Overall, I think Curlin got the best out of all of them.
Not really into Horse Racing prior to 2004, I've been going back watching past races and all, but nothing really beats the excitement of seeing it live, I'd love to experience actually being there as I'm every bit as sure as its downright the most exciting 2 minutes (give or take) in sports. The 1970's must have been the pristine time to be a Horse Racing fan; if I were around back then, I'm sure I'd add a Secretariat, Ruffian, Affirmed, and Seattle Slew to the list no doubt. Movies and videos don't seem to do the past champions justice, as I said above, nothing beats seeing it live.

I have two and can't separate them for favourite and second favourite.
Males - It's got to be the Iron Horse, Giant's Causeway. We see lots of talent on the racetrack, and some multiple G1 winners, but rarely do you see horses with the guts and determination of Giant's Causeway. His battle with Tiznow down the home stretch of the 2000 BC Classic is one of my favourite races of all time. The Giant is also proving himself as a true heir to the Storm Cat dynasty. He has produced winners on all surfaces, with them setting track records from 7f to 10f.
Females - Ouija Board. A dual BC Filly and Mare turf winner. Japan Cup, The Epsom Oaks, with the list going on and on. She's also just one of a select few fillies that had the ability to go and honestly compete with the colts.

I did not start following horse racing until 1999. I was not raised with it apart of my life. So in my short ten years I would have to say "Point Given". The it was amazing watching him on the rail to barely win the Haskell!!!

Ok, recent horses that I have actualy seen race would have to be Curlin, Big Brown, and Zenyata. But since I love the underdog I would have to say that winning the Kentucky Derby at 50:1 odds, Giacomo would be right up at the top.

I began going to the track with my dad in 1972, I was thirteen. I remember in 1973 when the great Secretariat, became the first horse in 25 years to win the triple crown. Back before the age of VCR's or DVD's, my older brother sat a tape recorder by the speaker on the T.V., thereby capturing all three of that years triple crown races. That tape is now one of our family's heirlooms. "...Secretariat is moving like a tremendous machine!"...really special stuff.
I loved Big Red.
I still believe that if Secretariat had not come along when he did Sham would've have won the triple crown. (But such is the nature of horse racing.)
It was out of that crop of horses that my favorite came. He was a good horse at 3, but from 4 onward he became mighty. He routinely spotted 20 pounds or more to the worlds best and beat them, toting 130+. One sportswriter of the day said, "when Forego begins his drive, he doesn't appear to be running, he appears to reach forward with his massive stride, grab the track and throw it savagely under and behind him." After the Marlboro Cup, Willie Shoemaker said, "This race was the most thrilling of my life, and Forego is the greatest horse I ever sat on."
FOREGO his my favorite horse.
But heck, Riva Ridge, Majestic Prince, Affirmed, Seattle Slew,Turkoman, Wild Again.....I love 'em all.

theoph1000,
I too was a huge Forego fan. I grew up near Belmont
Park and as a teenager in the 70's had the chance to see all the greats race at Belmont. Forego had a cult following at Belmont. I had the priviledge to see over 30 of his races in NY. Not many horses in
history could win Grade I stakes from 7 furlongs to 2 miles carrying the
weight that he carried. His heart and courage was unmatched. This from a horse that was never 100% sound. He gave the public many
unbelievable finishes and was truly loved in NY.
I also got to see the greatest race ever run live. Watching Secretariat in the Belmont winning the triple crown was truly one of the greatest moments in sports! The year of 1970 produced some of the greatest horses ever....
Thanks, Mike

Hmm, tough one.
Cockney Rebel (now retired to stud) would have to be there after his win in the 2007 2000 Guineas at 33/1. Was at the finishing post when he came home by a few lengths. Looked a magnificent horse, and he won that big race towards the end of his career. Fitting really.
Yeates is a cracking horse and deserves a mention, always look out for her.
Duke Of Marmalade is one I have followed for years, got her big break over in Ireland, before dominating the UK Flat season for the last few years, but another favourite Henrythenavigator looks set to push Duke all the way this season. Should be a cracker.
Away from the flats and into the jumps then Kauto Star or Denman are personal faves of mine. As was Exotic Dancer, but he sadly passed away in the stable after the 2009 Hennesey Gold Cup. Won me a few quid in his day. Comply Or Die (2008 Grand National winner, 2009 Grand National runner-up) is one to watch out for, but if he runs in the 2010 Grand National then he could be penalised with a weight of nearly 12 stone - and would be the first horse since Red Rum to do so.
However, my all time absolute favourite horse is a little known horse called What Katie Did.

I'm very new to horse racing. I still remember the day when I was forever hooked into the sport of kings. Afleet Alex rounds the turn entering the final stretch and out of nowhere almost falls flat on his face. Watching him bound back up and win the Preakness stakes drew me into the sport like none other could. The display of athleticism is one I will never forget. Afleet Alex is my favorite of all time simply because he introduced me to the thrill of horse racing.

I will name two. One, most people outside the northwest have never heard of. Turbulator, by Cold Command (a son or grandson of War Admiral, i"ll have to look that up) a strerch running fool who ran the big circut, Longacres, Playfair, Portland Meadows and Yakima Meadows. Always a fan favorite, he gave the people up there many a thrill. His biggest wins were probably the Longacres Mile twice, but he won about every stakes and handicap offered in the NW at least once. His owner was once asked why he didn't try California, His answer, "I would rather be a big fish in a small pond than a small fish in the ocean" .
My other choice is Forego, in my opinion, the greatest of them all. He won races up to 2 miles, sometimes spotting the other horses up to 25 lbs. The reason he was retired, his connections didn't want him to have to carry Deacon Jones or Rosie Greer.

you could spend forever on this topic in north america while i haven't seen many races i really admired tiznow both times at the breeders cup.he showed excellent battling qualities and came out on top both times when eyeballed.but i live in ireland and i could not pick even a top ten as there have been so many great champions to watch and admire. i'm sure some of you guys in the states feel the same way.someof the europeans are sea bird, roberto, sir ivor, nijinsky, sadler's wells, rock of gibraltar, galileo, giants causeway, pawneese, shergar, troy, ela mana mou, kris, tap on wood,el gran senor, yeats, ardross, lemoss, alleged, grundy, the minstrel, allez france, dahlia etc.etc.also we have a great national hunt scene(jumpers)and there have been lots of champions in that sphere as wellbut the one horse every national hunt fan will pick is arkle a.k.a himself he was able to give two stone 28lbs. and more to top class horses and beat them so much so that they had to change handicapping they framed one set of weights for races where arkle ran and another separate set for when he didn,t sorry to be so long winded but that is only the tip of the iceberg

Im from Australia, and I never followed the oversea's US horses very much.
But my favourite horse would have to be Plac1dArk. For two reasons, it was owned by relatives. So I had the inside news on its progression, and could follow it closely. And because it was around the time of my youth when I was a avid punter.
Plac1dArk is a cheerful but sad story, It was bought cheeply for $5000, and went on to win many many millions and Australian horse of the year. But it soon got a knee injury and was a gelding so it was no good for breeding so it was raced until death. It was soon forced to race on soft tracks only, while doped with pain killers and anti inflamitary drugs. It ended up getting put down for a shattered sesamoid, while still in its prime (except the knee).
Placid Ark was the first horse to win the treble of Autumn sprinters in Melbourne. He broke several course and track records along the way, another career cut short by tragedy.
********
Plac1dArk was an Australian thoroughbred foaled in Western Australia. His sire Arkenstone was a winning son of the Western Australian champion sire Zvornik and his dam was Northern Queen a mare bred in South Australia by the USA imported stallion Star of the North.
Placid Ark was purchased at the Sunspeed Yearling Sales for $5,000 for a novice eight-person syndicate.
Plac1dArk earned number of wins as a two year old including the first ever defeat of star filly Jungle Dawn who later campaigned successfully in the United States of America and after making a promising start in his three-year-old season in Perth, Western Australia, plans were made to take him to Melbourne to contest the autumn sprinters treble of the Lightning Stakes, Oakleigh Plate & Newmarket Handicap. Placid Ark made history when he became the first horse to win all three races in the same season.
Plac1d Ark's performances in the 1986-87 racing season resulted in him being voted a winner of Australian Champion Racehorse of the Year honors.
Out of racing for a time due to an injury, Plac1d Ark came back in 1988 to win the Bobby Lewis Quality before a shattered sesamoid resulted in the gelding having to be euthanized.
Lightning Stakes (1987)
Oakleigh Plate (1987)
Newmarket Handicap (1987)
Canterbury Stakes (1987)

Afleet Alex hands down. His Preakness and Belmont were amazing especially when he blew by Giacomo in the Belmont like he was standing still. What a turn of foot from that plucky little colt. And when he came back from that throat infection after the Rebel. I'm watching his foals race for the first time this year but so far he hasn't had a winner.

So many to choose , hard to narrow down.Of coarse like all, i am huge fan of SEC. (BIG RED) Seattle Slew, seabiscuit..etc.... I also loved pharlap.Unfortunately like so many others sad endings to these beautiful animals that are in this sport for just that. Another sad ending would have to be said for ferdinad.
More recently...i would have to pick one horse who nearly won the triple crown....Real Quiet. Oh I thought he had it and i was shaking , thinking to myself, here it comes , history in the making, then lost it by a nose...so-to-speak. I think his runs were awesome, i was truly rooting for him to get that triple crown, but ah well...we wait still for that magical horse who brings the triple crown back...i hope i witness it in my lifetime i remember secretariats triple crown moment, tho i was just a kid it was amazing...and seattle slew...ahhhh...itis difficult to truly name one horse. Wikkittklown: too many people on here always talking about the same horses.. I agree they are the greatest ever in the sport.. but we talking about favorites not greats persay.. i think the most fun to watch horse ever was Intercontinental (GB) i will never forget her last trip in the breeders cup.. Jerry Bailey aboard.. she threw her head and acted an ass all the way around the track cause she just wanted to be let go!!! she loved to run and knew she was good at it.. im surprised nobody else is talking about that.. yeah she aint no Curlin or nothin.. but she was GREAT!!! one of my favorite Filly/Mares to watch.. she always gave ya a great showing on the track.. and one cant talk about fillies without mentioning the awesome Ouija Board.. (hope i spelled it right) she was about as amazing as anything ive ever seen... Secretariat was good.. but it was all due to his heart being 4 times larger than any other horses.. therefore more oxygen in his blood.. and that is what a horse needs to run.. so he was a freak.. but he showed us all what freaks are capable of!!! gotta love him... Rachel Alexandra.. she is one hot little filly.. very talented horse.. love watching her run too.. ive always been a bigger fan of the fillies and mares than the colts and geldings.. even in the barn.. Curlin.. what needs to be said.. everyone knows Curlin!!! God status in the industry... also would like to add.. a filly that i used to be in on.. her name was Bold n Alert.. (bold ruckus - gold alert.. if i remember right) she had more heart than any horse ive ever seen in my life.. yall never heard of her.. she was just a horse we had here in south louisiana.. but her last race ever.. she went 6.5 furlongs at Delta Downs.. first step out of the gates she bowed her right front.. she stuttered a little .. but continued to run on 3 legs.. all the way around the track.. she got beat about a head for it all but she was closing so fast on 3 legs it was soooo amazing.. she now breeding.. but ill never forget the amazing performances she gave us on the track!!!

I'd have to say Easy Goer is my all-time favorite horse. Saratoga is my "home" track, and Easy Goer was a Saratoga maiden when I had just started to "get into" racing, so he's got a special place in my heart. I saw him lose his first race by a nose to a horse named Lorenzoni. He didn't lose again until the BC Juvenile at Churchill Downs where he caught a muddy track he didn't like. He looked like a monster at three and didn't lose until he once again caught a wet track at Churchill and lost to Sunday Silence. Sunday Silence won the rematch by a nose at Pimlico in one of the greatest races of all time. Easy Goer redeemed himself with an eight length romp in the Belmont. His final time of 2:26 is second only to Secretariat. They met again in the '89 BC Classic where SS won by a diminishing half length. They were scheduled to meet at Arlington Park in the late Spring of their 4yo seasons, but both horses broke down in training and had to be retired. Heres a link to the '89 Preakness if anyone is interested.

I always remember my times as a punter, happy watching the horse go around in a nice position. Same as easy goer did in that race.
one out two back -> one out one back -> hitting the lead.. You always know you at least have a good chance.
Its when they are two to three back and on the fence that you would start yelling at the jockey and could almost rip your ticket up before the race finished.
Was a nice vid thanks..
SS seemed to squeeze EG onto the rails a bit, didn't give it much room anyway..
Im not sure how close it ended up. It would have been closer if EG stopped eying off SS and put its nose out.
Blinkers might have won it the race too.

Nothing in horse racing has thrilled me more, before or since, then Affirmed beating Alydar in those 3 races in 1978. but especialy in the Belmont after losing the lead to Alydar in the stretch and all seemed lost. Then, incredibly, getting it back! Such tanacity. Affirmed and the '86 Mets, 2 competitors that were supposed to lose, but through sheer will, refused to do so.
